I've been to the A&K property in the Punta Cana resort there and can provide as much specific information as you'd like.

Generally -

Pros - Beautiful beaches, pretty good restaurants (Bamboo, La Yola, and the Beach Club - (just make sure to stay away from the resort hotel buffet)), quiet and private, proximity to the airport (the airport is in the resort)

Negatives - Number of restaurant choices, shopping is limited (although some new stores may have opened at Cap Cana since we were there), lack of a grocery store within about an hour drive (definitely take advantage of DC's shopping service), limited availability of fresh fruits, vegetables and meats outside of the resort restaurants (I got the impression it was flown in for the higher end restaurants), so if we went back we'd count on eating out more versus cooking

A&K residence - very nice residence "compound," beautiful craftsmanship, water features, high end kitchen, great pool and hot tub, great housekeeper, maintenance guy and concierge, incredible VIP airport service (i.e., meet you on tarmac, take you through security and customs without waiting)
